Lubbock, TX – Strong winds and dangerously low humidity levels have prompted a Red Flag Warning across the far southern Texas Panhandle, South Plains, and Rolling Plains through Saturday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT today. The alert replaces the earlier Fire Weather Watch and covers multiple counties including Lubbock, Parmer, Hale, Childress, and Stonewall.
Southwest winds are expected to range from 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity could fall as low as 8%, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread due to critically dry fuels.
Residents are strongly advised to avoid any outdoor burning, as even small fires could grow quickly and become uncontrollable. Fire departments and emergency services across the region remain on high alert.
The affected areas typically experience dry springtime conditions, but Saturday’s combination of heat, wind, and aridity presents an elevated threat. Authorities urge citizens to secure fire-prone materials, avoid parking on dry grass, and stay informed through official updates.
The warning expires at 9 p.m., though dry conditions may persist into Sunday.
