Amarillo, TX – Snowfall and freezing temperatures are expected to sweep across the Texas Panhandle on Thursday, potentially disrupting road travel. Forecasts indicate up to two inches of snow may fall, especially along US-60, where hazardous conditions are anticipated.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Amarillo, the highest impact is forecast for Thursday afternoon through the night. Slick roads and reduced visibility could make travel dangerous, particularly for those commuting in the southeast Panhandle. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips.
The weather on Wednesday will see highs near 35°F with partly cloudy skies before conditions worsen Thursday. Snow showers are expected to begin early Thursday afternoon as temperatures hover near 36°F. Winds from the south will shift to the north by evening, bringing gusts of up to 20 mph.
Thursday night will remain cloudy, with a 30% chance of continued snowfall before midnight. Overnight lows are predicted to dip to 22°F. The cold snap will persist into Friday with mostly sunny skies and highs around 36°F.
Looking ahead, the weekend offers some relief as temperatures gradually rise. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a high near 47°F, while Sunday and Monday promise sunny skies and highs in the low 40s.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for cold conditions and check their vehicles for winter readiness. Monitor local weather updates for the latest road conditions and advisories.
