Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, with wind chills plunging as low as -30°F through noon Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, dangerously cold conditions will persist across the region, including Amarillo, Dumas, Pampa, and Guymon. The combination of frigid air and strong winds will create life-threatening conditions, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. Experts warn that exposed skin can suffer frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
Residents are urged to layer up with hats, gloves, and face coverings when outdoors. Pets should be brought inside, and extra precautions should be taken with space heaters and generators to prevent fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Authorities recommend checking on elderly neighbors, family members, and those without proper heating. The extreme cold is expected to ease by Thursday afternoon, but frigid temperatures will continue.
