Lubbock, Texas – Visibility across parts of West Texas plunged below a quarter-mile early Saturday, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory for Lubbock and nine surrounding counties through 10 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, drivers in Bailey, Crosby, Floyd, Garza, Hale, Hockley, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, and Terry counties should expect severely reduced visibility, especially along US-84, I-27, and local farm-to-market roads. The advisory began shortly before 5 a.m. CDT and is expected to lift mid-morning as temperatures rise and fog dissipates.

Cities including Plainview, Brownfield, and Slaton are waking up to thick fog, complicating travel plans for post–Fourth of July travelers. Authorities urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance.

The patchy fog developed overnight under calm winds and clear skies, trapping surface moisture from recent storms. While no crashes have been reported yet, emergency responders remain on alert due to the limited visibility in rural areas.

Conditions should improve late morning, but if fog lingers longer in low-lying areas, the advisory may be extended. Stay tuned to local alerts and avoid non-essential travel until visibility improves.
