Corpus Christi, TX – A fire weather alert is in effect across South Texas today, as elevated conditions threaten the Rio Grande Plains and Brush Country through 8 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, the affected area includes Live Oak, Duval, McMullen, Webb, and La Salle counties. Wind speeds from the southeast are expected to range between 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 20 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop to between 20 to 30 percent, creating extremely dry conditions that heighten wildfire risk.

Officials are urging residents to avoid open flames or activities that could spark fires. Welding, grinding, and parking vehicles on tall, dry grass should be avoided. The NWS also warned against discarding cigarette butts improperly, as a single spark could ignite fast-spreading fires.

The region’s brush-heavy terrain and prolonged dry spell contribute to unusually high fuel loads. These conditions are common for early spring, but today’s combination of low humidity and gusty winds raises the danger significantly.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert, follow local burn restrictions, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Fire crews remain on standby across the region.
