Austin, TX – South-Central Texas will experience unseasonably warm temperatures this weekend and early next week, with record highs possible Monday. However, a strong cold front will arrive Monday night, bringing a dramatic temperature drop just in time for the New Year.

According to the National Weather Service, highs on Sunday will reach the mid-70s in Austin, with clear skies and minimal weather impacts. Monday could push into the low 80s, setting a record for late December heat. The cold front, arriving late Monday, will drop temperatures into the 40s overnight and bring daytime highs into the 50s by Wednesday.

Drivers should plan for foggy conditions through midmorning Sunday along major roadways such as I-35, especially near low-lying areas. The sudden change in temperatures by Tuesday could lead to icy spots on elevated roads during overnight hours as lows dip to the mid-30s.

For New Year’s Day, Austin residents can expect partly sunny skies, highs near 59°F, and lows around 40°F. The dry weather will persist into late next week, offering a clear outlook for post-holiday travel and outdoor activities.

Residents are advised to take precautions during the coldest nights by protecting sensitive plants and ensuring outdoor pets have shelter. As the region transitions from record heat to freezing temperatures, monitoring updates from local weather services is crucial for travel and safety planning.
