Amarillo, TX – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the entire Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, signaling critical fire weather conditions from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the warning replaces the previously issued Fire Weather Watch. Southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 10%, will significantly increase wildfire risk across the region.
The affected area spans from Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver counties in Oklahoma to Dallam, Randall, Potter, and other counties throughout the Texas Panhandle, including Palo Duro Canyon. The Red Flag Threat Index for the region is forecasted between 5 and 7, indicating elevated to extreme fire potential.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor activities that involve open flames, sparks, or heat-producing equipment during the warning period. Officials advise securing trailer chains, refraining from campfires, and properly discarding cigarettes.
This event marks a stark contrast from typical spring fire conditions, with unseasonably low humidity and high winds combining to create a volatile environment. Emergency responders remain on heightened alert as the region braces for possible fire outbreaks.
