Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles are waking up to a hard freeze Saturday morning, with temperatures plunging to 31°F and threatening sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT for Cimarron County in Oklahoma and Dallam, Sherman, and Hartley Counties in Texas. Cities impacted include Boise City, Stratford, Dalhart, Channing, and Hartley.

Sub-freezing temperatures could kill crops and damage unprotected outdoor pipes. Gardeners and growers are urged to cover plants, move potted vegetation indoors, and drip faucets to prevent freezing. Livestock owners should also ensure water supplies remain unfrozen.

This late-season cold snap follows a stretch of milder spring temperatures, increasing the risk for frostbite to newly planted fields. While temperatures are expected to rise quickly after sunrise, early-morning lows may linger long enough to cause agricultural losses.

Residents should continue monitoring local alerts as more cold mornings could return early next week.
