Morristown, TN – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia with heavy snow and ice starting Friday morning. Forecasters predict accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in most areas west of Interstates 81 and 75, with 2 to 4 inches east. Ice accumulations could create additional hazards, especially during Friday’s evening commute.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, effective from 10 a.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday. According to the NWS, snow will intensify by mid-morning and may mix with sleet or freezing rain in areas east of major highways. Bridges and overpasses will likely become slick, posing significant risks for motorists.

Forecasters are urging residents to delay non-essential travel and to carry emergency supplies if driving is unavoidable. Road conditions across Tennessee and Virginia are expected to deteriorate rapidly by late afternoon. Commuters should prepare for extended delays and dangerous conditions, particularly in mountainous regions.

Emergency services recommend keeping flashlights, food, and water in vehicles during this weather event. Residents are advised to monitor road conditions by calling 511 or visiting local transportation websites for updates.

Snow and ice are also forecast in areas of southwest North Carolina, with up to 4 inches of snow and light ice expected through Saturday morning. Those in the affected regions should exercise caution and follow updates from local authorities.

Travel disruptions and power outages are possible through the weekend. Residents should prepare for freezing temperatures and limited mobility as cleanup efforts commence.
