Memphis, TN – Triple-digit heat index values could blanket much of West Tennessee and northern Mississippi by Tuesday afternoon, creating potentially dangerous conditions for outdoor activity and travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a summer-like weather pattern will settle in early next week, with apparent temperatures climbing as high as 101°F Tuesday and Wednesday in cities like Memphis and Tupelo. Heat index values are expected to peak between 4 and 7 p.m. each day, while overnight temperatures will stay in the upper 70s, offering little relief from the humidity.
In Memphis, apparent temperatures are forecast to hit 100°F by 4 p.m. Tuesday and remain above 95°F well into the evening. Tupelo and Jonesboro will follow a similar pattern, with heat indices of 98–101°F during peak hours. Jackson could reach 97°F by Tuesday afternoon and again Wednesday.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Prolonged exposure to heat can increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for the elderly and those without air conditioning.
This heat surge marks one of the first significant warmups of June and may signal the start of a prolonged hot stretch. More advisories could follow if heat index values climb further into triple digits.
