Memphis, Tenn. – Showers and thunderstorms could drench the Memphis metro overnight, with heavy downpours and lightning expected to move through the area before 4 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, there’s an 80% chance of storms overnight, with rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible. Winds will shift from the south to northwest by morning, and patchy fog could develop early Friday before skies begin to clear by late morning.

Areas along I-240, U.S. 51, and throughout Shelby County should prepare for slick roads during the early commute. While severe storms aren’t expected, localized flooding in low-lying spots is possible. Drivers are urged to slow down and avoid water-covered roadways.

Temperatures will fall to around 63°F overnight, then rebound to a high near 76°F Friday afternoon as drier air moves in. By the weekend, conditions improve significantly, with sunshine and highs in the low 80s expected through Sunday.

The NWS says the next rain chance returns Wednesday, but no major weather systems are forecast before then. Stay weather-aware overnight and check conditions before heading out early Friday.
