Memphis, Tenn. – A dangerous combo of triple-digit heat and afternoon thunderstorms will target the Memphis metro beginning Sunday, July 6, with more storms on the way.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will climb to 96°F Sunday with heat index values near 105°F. By Monday, a surge of moisture will increase the risk of scattered thunderstorms after 1 p.m. across Shelby County and the I-240 corridor. A 40 percent chance of storms will persist Monday and Monday night, potentially impacting evening travel and power reliability.
Localized downpours and lightning could affect major routes including I-40, I-55, and surface roads in Memphis. The West Tennessee Office of Emergency Management advises residents to charge devices in advance and avoid driving during active thunderstorms. Winds may briefly gust with some cells, though widespread severe weather is not currently expected.
Tuesday brings a 50 percent chance of more thunderstorms by afternoon. Nights remain muggy, with lows hovering near 75°F. Storm chances will continue through midweek, peaking again Wednesday with another round of showers likely after 1 p.m. Confidence remains high that the unsettled pattern will stretch into Thursday.
