Huntsville, Ala. – Strong to severe storms are expected across the Tennessee Valley this afternoon, with damaging winds posing the greatest threat for areas including Fayetteville, Cullman, and Huntsville between 1 and 9 p.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, storms will develop in waves starting early afternoon, peaking between 4 and 9 p.m. Storm timing varies by location: Florence and Russellville may see impacts first from 1–3 p.m., with Huntsville between 4–6 p.m., and Fort Payne and Stevenson closer to 6–9 p.m. All of north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee remain under a Level 2 (out of 5) risk for severe weather.

Hazards include gusty to damaging winds — potentially over 60 mph — with medium confidence in isolated hail and very low tornado potential. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm windows. Emergency managers urge having multiple ways to receive alerts, including phone apps, weather radios, and local broadcasts.

Storm chances drop late Friday night, but a low risk of additional strong storms may return Saturday afternoon. Another update is expected by Friday evening.
