Memphis, Tenn. – West Tennessee residents are in for another sweltering day as heat index values climb as high as 109°F through 8 p.m. Saturday, putting vulnerable populations at risk of heat-related illness.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a heat advisory remains in effect for nearly all of West Tennessee, including Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Lauderdale counties. The advisory warns of heat index values ranging between 105°F and 109°F from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Prolonged exposure, especially over multiple days, significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Memphis, Jackson, and surrounding cities are expected to see peak heat by early afternoon. Outdoor workers are urged to shift activities to early morning or evening hours. Parents should never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, and residents without access to air conditioning are encouraged to visit cooling centers or public buildings.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light clothing, applying sunscreen, and limiting outdoor activity. This level of heat can be especially dangerous for the elderly, young children, and those with preexisting health conditions.
This advisory is expected to expire by Saturday evening, but more heat alerts could follow if conditions persist into Sunday and Monday.
