Knoxville, Tenn. – Drivers across East Tennessee are waking up to dense fog that’s reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile and making roads hazardous for the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. EDT for much of the Southern and Central Tennessee Valley, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, Oak Ridge, and Sevierville. Fog is expected to linger through rush hour, especially along I-40, I-75, and U.S. 129.

Counties impacted include Knox, Anderson, Hamilton, Roane, Sevier, Monroe, Blount, and Polk. Visibility could drop rapidly in spots, especially in low-lying areas and near bodies of water. Commuters are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra stopping distance.

Local schools and businesses are open, but delays may occur where fog is most persistent. This is the second dense fog advisory issued this month across the region, as springtime moisture and cooling overnight temperatures continue to create early morning travel risks.

Conditions should improve after 9 a.m., but drivers are advised to stay alert for changing visibility through mid-morning.
