Nashville, TN – A powerful winter storm is expected to sweep across Tennessee and the Mid-South this weekend, bringing dangerous ice accumulation and travel disruptions. Significant icing is forecast for Sunday, with areas east of the Ozarks and into the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys at the highest risk.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, freezing rain and sleet are expected to begin early Sunday morning, intensifying by the evening. Ice accumulation of over a quarter inch is likely in some areas, making roads hazardous and increasing the potential for power outages. Motorists are strongly urged to delay travel plans until conditions improve.

Snowfall will also impact areas to the north, with heavy accumulations expected from Kansas to Indiana. Locations along and north of I-70 could see up to 8 inches of snow starting late Saturday and continuing into Sunday.

In Tennessee, the combination of ice and freezing temperatures could cause widespread disruptions, including flight cancellations and road closures. Emergency officials recommend residents prepare by stocking up on essentials and ensuring flashlights and generators are ready in case of extended outages.

The winter storm will push out of the region late Monday, but frigid temperatures will linger into next week, with lows dipping into the teens. Light snow showers may persist through Monday before skies clear by Tuesday.
