Greenback, Tennessee – A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck just south of Knoxville, Tennessee, at approximately 9:34 a.m. local time on May 10, 2025. The tremor, which originated 21 kilometers southeast of Greenback, had a depth of 24.9 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake was felt across surrounding regions, including Knoxville, though no significant damage has been reported. Residents in nearby areas reported noticeable shaking, but authorities have not indicated any major structural concerns at this time. The quake was reportedly felt as far away as the Carolinas and parts of Georgia by those reporting to the USGS.
The USGS notes that seismic activity in this region is relatively uncommon, although minor tremors are not unheard of. Despite the strength of this tremor, there is a low probability of significant aftershocks, with less than a 1% chance of a major aftershock in the following week.
