Memphis, Tennessee – A rapid heat surge will drive temperatures across western Tennessee and eastern Arkansas into the upper 80s by Saturday afternoon, bringing summer-like warmth and increasing the risk of late-day thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, there is an 80 to 90 percent probability of above-normal temperatures across the Mid-South through early next week. West Tennessee, including Memphis, and eastern Arkansas, including Jonesboro and West Memphis, are in a high-confidence zone for sustained heat.
Memphis is expected to reach the upper 80s between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, with similar conditions extending west along I-40 into Arkansas. Little Rock could approach 90 degrees, while northeast Arkansas climbs into the mid to upper 80s with increasing humidity.
By late afternoon into the evening, Gulf moisture will fuel scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region. Storms may produce brief heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts over 40 mph, especially along I-40 and I-55, potentially slowing travel during peak hours.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and remain alert for rapidly changing weather late in the day. This pattern will persist through the weekend into early next week, with additional advisories likely as heat and storm chances continue.
