Nashville, Tennessee – More than 3.5 million residents across Tennessee and northern Alabama are under a thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Wednesday, as fast-moving storms capable of 70 mph wind gusts, quarter-size hail, and isolated tornadoes move across the region during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch covers a wide portion of Middle Tennessee and the Tennessee Valley, including Nashville, Murfreesboro, Columbia, Manchester, Cookeville, Crossville, Winchester, Huntsville, and Florence. Forecasters warn that a few rotating storms could quickly strengthen as warm, unstable air surges north ahead of an approaching cold front.

The greatest concern through the early evening will be damaging straight-line winds that could snap tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages, particularly along the I-65 and I-24 corridors through Nashville and Murfreesboro. Brief tornado spin-ups cannot be ruled out, especially if individual storm cells intensify ahead of the main line.

Drivers across Middle Tennessee and north Alabama should be alert for sudden downpours reducing visibility and debris on roadways, particularly on elevated interstates and rural highways. Emergency officials recommend keeping phones charged, enabling weather alerts, and identifying a sturdy shelter location in case warnings are issued.

Storm activity is expected to remain possible through 8 p.m. Wednesday, and additional warnings could be issued quickly if stronger cells develop across the watch area.
