Tennessee-Alabama Tornadoes: EF-1 Strikes Near Tims Ford Lake, EF-0 Crosses Near Stevenson

Huntsville, AL – Two tornadoes touched down in the Tennessee Valley on May 25, briefly disrupting communities across southern Tennessee and northeast Alabama with winds up to 93 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the stronger of the two tornadoes—rated EF-1—formed near Tims Ford Lake at 4:01 p.m. and tracked 6.78 miles across southern Franklin County, Tennessee. With peak winds of 93 mph and a width of 100 yards, the Bigfoot Tornado crossed near Tullahoma Highway before dissipating seven minutes later. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Roughly 30 minutes later, an EF-0 tornado touched down near Cave Springs, Alabama, traveling 8.05 miles between 4:34 p.m. and 4:44 p.m. The storm reached estimated peak winds of 85 mph and crossed U.S. Highway 72 near Stevenson. Though the tornado had a wider path—140 yards—there were again no reported injuries.

Emergency officials remind residents that even lower-rated tornadoes can pose significant danger. Stay weather-aware by enabling alerts on mobile devices and identifying shelter locations in advance.

No additional tornado activity has been reported, but the National Weather Service may issue updated assessments later this week.
