Huntsville, Alabama – Strong to severe thunderstorms may impact communities across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee this afternoon, bringing damaging winds, hail, and the chance for a few brief tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the greatest threat window spans from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday as storms develop along a surface trough and outflow boundary. While the overall risk is low, forecasters emphasize that any storms that form could intensify quickly.
Areas at risk include Huntsville, Decatur, Athens, Florence, and extending northward into Pulaski and Fayetteville, Tennessee. Gusty winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are the main hazards, though an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and avoid flooded roadways.
Residents should monitor local alerts and take shelter if warnings are issued. “If you can hear thunder or see lightning, head inside,” NWS advised. Officials also recommend keeping multiple alert sources on hand, including NOAA weather radios and mobile apps.
Rain chances increase again Thursday evening into early Friday before clearer skies return Saturday. Additional updates are expected later today as storm development progresses.
