Marquette, MI — An intense ice storm continues to hammer parts of Upper Michigan, with Marquette County bracing for the worst through Sunday evening.
Heavy snow, freezing rain, and sleet will persist until 8 p.m. Sunday, with dangerous road conditions and widespread power outages likely. The National Weather Service warns of up to 12 inches of snow in higher terrain, paired with ice accumulations near half an inch. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, especially along M-553, where roads may become impassable.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, snow began Friday night, worsened Saturday, and will peak Sunday with heavy bands of snow and sleet. Wind gusts up to 25 mph could compound damage to trees and power lines, increasing the risk of outages across southern Marquette County.
Skandia, Gwinn, and Republic are expected to see the highest ice totals. Light snow may persist through Sunday night with blustery conditions continuing into Monday.
