Sumter, SC – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is again warning residents about a recurring phone and text scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement or court officials to demand payment of fake fines or fees.

According to Sheriff Anthony Dennis, the scammers often use the real names and phone numbers of deputies or local agencies to appear legitimate. “We want our citizens to stay alert and protect themselves from becoming victims,” Dennis said.

In many reports, victims are told to make immediate payments through credit or debit cards, mobile apps, or prepaid gift cards. Some scammers even arrange conference calls that appear to include another “officer,” furthering the illusion.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized it never requests or accepts payments over the phone and that all fines must be paid in person at the courthouse. Residents are urged not to share personal or financial information by phone, text, or email and to verify suspicious calls using publicly listed numbers.

“If you receive a call threatening arrest or demanding payment, hang up immediately and contact the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office,” Dennis said.

Authorities encourage residents to share this warning—particularly with older adults—to help prevent future scams.
