Wakefield, VA – A strong cold front is set to sweep through Virginia today, bringing severe storms, heavy rain, and dangerous winds. Residents along I-95 should prepare for conditions worsening after 12 p.m., with gusts exceeding 60 mph possible. Outdoor decorations, vehicles, and loose items should be secured to minimize damage risks.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest storm threat is concentrated in southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Heavy rainfall is expected to peak during the afternoon and evening hours, creating hazardous travel conditions on major routes like I-95 and US-460. Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

A tornado cannot be ruled out, particularly in the enhanced-risk zones near Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Coastal areas face additional hazards, including potential tidal flooding. Gusty winds will extend through the evening, diminishing only after midnight.

By Thursday, calmer weather will return, with sunshine and cooler temperatures in the mid-40s. However, expect gusty conditions lingering into the morning hours before subsiding. The rest of the week features sunny skies and highs ranging from 41°F to 50°F, with a slight chance of rain on Sunday.

Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA radios and mobile apps, and should finalize preparations early. Keep an emergency kit handy and avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours.
