Pennsylvania wakes up to a crisp 24 degrees and clear skies, but change is already lining up behind the bright late-winter sun. Frost coats windshields across Centre County this morning, and melting later today could set up slick spots once temperatures fall back toward freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, sunshine pushes highs near 50 degrees today with light southwest winds. It will feel like a brief taste of spring. That changes Saturday night as clouds thicken and a 50% chance of snow develops after 1 a.m. Temperatures dip to around 30 degrees as flakes begin to fall.
Saturday stays mostly sunny and milder, reaching 53 degrees before the pattern shifts. A slight chance of snow showers lingers into Sunday before 1 p.m., with highs cooling to 37. Northwest winds increase to 6 to 9 mph, adding a biting edge to the air.
Drivers along I-99 and Route 322 should plan for reduced visibility at times late Saturday into early Sunday. Even light snow can turn slushy fast. As readings drop Sunday night to 17 degrees, any leftover moisture could refreeze. This is prime flash-freeze season. Wet pavement today may harden quickly after sunset this weekend.
Monday brings another chance of snow with a high near 29. By Tuesday, a wintry mix is possible, including rain and snow showers and even brief freezing rain before temperatures climb toward 37.
March opens with unsettled weather, but longer-range trends show moderating temperatures by midweek and above-normal readings building later next week. Spring warmth is inching closer.
