St. Louis, Missouri – Drivers along I-44 and I-55 could face sudden whiteout downpours and 60 mph wind gusts by 2 p.m. Wednesday as severe thunderstorms ignite across eastern Missouri, threatening to disrupt the afternoon commute within hours.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, severe storms are possible from noon until 5 p.m. Wednesday, with the highest concentration of activity along and south of the I-44 corridor. While not every storm will reach severe limits, forecasters warn that isolated cells could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, quarter-size hail, brief tornadoes and torrential rainfall capable of reducing visibility to under a half-mile.

Across Missouri, the risk zone stretches from Jefferson City through the St. Louis metro and south toward Farmington and Cape Girardeau. In the metro area, communities including Kirkwood, Sunset Hills and Arnold sit in the corridor most likely to see the strongest storms. Wind gusts of 60 mph can down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages, especially in neighborhoods with mature trees near utility lines.

Heavy bursts of rain may pond quickly on I-270, I-64 and I-255, creating hydroplaning risks during peak traffic between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Motorists should delay non-essential travel during active storms and avoid driving through water-covered roadways.

Residents are urged to keep multiple ways to receive warnings, including wireless alerts and local media. Identify a safe interior room away from windows in case a tornado warning is issued. Storm threats taper after 5 p.m., but additional advisories could be issued if stronger cells develop.
