Springfield, Illinois – After another night of dangerous cold, central Illinois is expected to see snow return this weekend, followed by slow temperature improvement early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, wind chills dropped to −10° to −20°F overnight, with actual low temperatures ranging from −5° to +5°F. While conditions will slowly improve, forecasters say temperatures will remain well below normal through the weekend.
Snow is expected to arrive Saturday afternoon or evening, continuing into Sunday. High temperatures Saturday are forecast to range from 8° to 15°F, with lows Saturday night between 5° and 12°F. On Sunday, highs should reach 14° to 17°F, with Sunday night lows falling back to −2° to +2°F.
While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, untreated roads and sidewalks could become slick, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling late Saturday or Sunday.
Looking ahead, the new workweek will start dry. Temperatures will remain cold Monday, with highs of 9° to 12°F, before a more noticeable warmup arrives by Tuesday, when highs are expected to climb into the mid-20s.
Residents are encouraged to continue cold-weather precautions while preparing for changing road conditions this weekend.
