Spotsylvania County, VA – A dog-related dispute escalated into a physical confrontation Wednesday evening, leading to an arrest and injuries to two deputies, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 6:11 p.m. to reports of an assault in the 4700 block of Turnberry Drive. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies first spoke with Heather Locke, 39, of Fredericksburg, who said she was attacked by a neighbor’s dog while retrieving her mail. She reported that the dog circled her, barking, prompting her to swing her purse to defend herself.
Moments later, the dog’s owner, Jaynyque Crawford, 25, of Fredericksburg, allegedly confronted Locke and pushed her, officials said. Locke provided deputies with video of the encounter.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies attempted to arrest Crawford for assault, but she allegedly began resisting—kicking, yelling, and flailing. During the struggle, Crawford allegedly struck one deputy in the face and scratched another on the hand. The deputies did not suffer serious injuries.
Deputies eventually detained Crawford and transported her to the magistrate’s office. She was denied bond and is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail, officials said.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office emphasized the dangers deputies face even during routine calls, noting that assaults on law enforcement are taken seriously.
This investigation remains ongoing.
