Montpelier, Vt. – Gusty winds and scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across southern Vermont Friday afternoon as a slow-moving weather system brings a surge of wet, unstable air.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, morning rain showers will give way to a higher chance of thunderstorms after midday, especially in areas south and east of Montpelier. Winds out of the south-southwest are expected to reach 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph through early evening.

Cities including Bennington, Brattleboro, and Rutland should prepare for brief heavy downpours and sudden wind gusts, particularly between 1 and 5 p.m. Friday. Drivers on Route 7 and I-91 may face reduced visibility and slick road conditions. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and stay indoors during thunderstorm activity.

This spring storm pattern follows a stretch of milder, drier days across the region, and serves as a reminder of May’s volatile weather swings. Power outages are unlikely but possible in wind-prone valleys.

Showers are expected to taper off late Friday night, but additional unsettled weather may return over the weekend. Stay tuned to NWS Burlington for updated advisories.
