Dayton, Ohio – Residents across the Miami Valley could face unhealthy breathing conditions Tuesday as ozone levels rise into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range, triggering an Air Quality Alert across much of southwest Ohio.
According to the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and Regional Air Pollution Control Agency, the alert is in effect for Tuesday, June 3, covering Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby counties. The National Weather Service notes that weather conditions will favor ground-level ozone formation throughout the day.
Children, older adults, and people with asthma or other respiratory issues are advised to limit time outdoors—especially during the afternoon and early evening when ozone levels typically peak. Sensitive individuals should reduce outdoor exercise, avoid high-traffic areas, and consider staying indoors during high-alert periods.
Dayton, Springfield, Troy, and Xenia are all included in the advisory zone. Residents in these areas should monitor symptoms like coughing, throat irritation, or shortness of breath. People with asthma should follow their management plans and keep medications on hand.
The alert is expected to last through Tuesday evening, with improved conditions possible overnight. More alerts may follow if ozone levels remain high.
