ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Near-record temperatures are set to impact New Mexico this weekend, bringing a high heat wave to Albuquerque and surrounding areas today and tomorrow. With temperatures expected to reach 80°F, residents are advised to take precautions against the heat, particularly those who are vulnerable to high temperatures. Following this, a strong storm system is projected to arrive Monday evening, potentially disrupting travel and causing high winds across northern New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service, a pattern shift will bring rain and snow showers to northwestern and north-central New Mexico, escalating into a statewide windy event by Tuesday. Wind gusts may exceed 50 mph, with a high probability of hazardous crosswinds impacting east-to-west-oriented highways, especially from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. MDT. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, as the strong gusts could impact vehicle stability and visibility on major routes, particularly along I-40 and I-25 corridors.
The extended forecast shows temperatures in Albuquerque reaching highs of 80°F today and 83°F tomorrow, before cooling down as the storm arrives Monday night. As of Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop, with highs around 74°F, followed by breezy, clear conditions. The strong winds will create a heightened fire danger and potential travel delays, especially in elevated areas where icy conditions may also develop.
