Springfield, Mo. – A dangerous combination of summer heat and scattered storms is settling over Missouri, with flash flooding possible through Friday evening and triple-digit heat indices building into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, heavy rainfall of 1–2 inches is expected along and north of I-44, where storms could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph. A Marginal Risk (5%) for severe weather continues today, with the highest storm chances between noon and 6 p.m. Thursday.
Localized flooding is most likely near low-lying roads and waterways, including areas near Rolla, Lebanon, and Joplin. Rain chances linger into Friday with a 40–60% chance for eastern areas like West Plains and Mountain Grove.
Temperatures will climb steadily into the 90s, with heat indices nearing 100°F Saturday and Sunday, especially east of Highway 63. Cities such as Houston, Willow Springs, and Salem may experience dangerous afternoon heat with limited storm relief.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activity during peak heat. Power outages and tree damage may result from today’s stronger storms.
