Springfield, Mo. – Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain could sweep across southwest Missouri by Tuesday evening, threatening flash flooding, large hail, and damaging winds from Joplin to Lebanon.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in place for both severe storms and excessive rainfall Tuesday, particularly after sunset. The greatest concerns include localized flash flooding and scattered wind damage, especially along the I-44 corridor from Springfield to Rolla.

Cities including Joplin, Pittsburg, Osage Beach, and Clinton fall under a broader area of concern stretching from southeast Kansas into central Missouri. Branson and West Plains remain in a Marginal Risk zone, where storms may still produce lightning and heavy downpours. Rainfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour in spots, quickly overwhelming drainage systems.

Drivers are urged to avoid low-lying roads during storms and have multiple ways to receive alerts. Secure outdoor items and stay indoors during lightning.

This system marks the beginning of a potentially active week of weather. Additional rounds of rain and storms are possible through midweek. Stay updated with NWS Springfield for new watches or warnings as conditions evolve.
