Sioux Falls, SD – Portions of southwest Minnesota and neighboring areas are preparing for hazardous winter weather this week. Light snow and freezing rain are expected today, followed by a strong cold front bringing sub-zero temperatures and dangerous wind chills by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain and snow may create slippery roads across southwest Minnesota this afternoon, with wind gusts reaching 30-40 mph. Drivers on major highways, including I-90, are urged to use caution as conditions are expected to worsen into the evening.

By Friday, daytime highs in Sioux Falls will briefly rise to the mid-30s, but a sharp cold front will arrive by Saturday. Temperatures will plummet to single digits, with wind chills as low as -20°F. Sub-zero lows are expected to continue through Sunday and early next week.

Residents should prepare for dangerously cold conditions, particularly Saturday night into Sunday morning. The NWS recommends limiting outdoor exposure and ensuring vehicles and homes are winter-ready.

Looking ahead, the extended forecast shows temperatures barely breaking into single digits through Monday, with wind gusts increasing to 25 mph. After the weekend, sunny but frigid conditions are likely to persist, with lows dipping below -10°F.
