Kansas – Bitterly cold wind chills are gripping southwest Kansas, with temperatures dropping as low as 5°F to 15°F near and west of Highway 283. The coldest air is expected through early Thursday morning, creating frostbite risks for anyone outdoors without proper clothing.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, Wednesday evening’s wind chills range from 10°F near Garden City to 25°F in south-central Kansas. By 8 a.m. Thursday, areas west of Highway 283 will see wind chills plummet to near 5°F, with gusts making the air feel even colder. Residents are urged to bundle up and limit outdoor exposure.

Looking ahead, Thursday brings some relief with sunny skies and a high near 53°F. Winds will shift to the north at 3 to 8 mph. Overnight, temperatures will drop to a low of 29°F under mostly clear skies. Friday promises warmer conditions, with a high of 57°F and light south winds at 5 to 9 mph.

The weekend forecast shows temperatures climbing further, reaching a high near 59°F on Saturday and 61°F by Sunday. Mostly sunny skies are expected, with nighttime lows in the 30s, providing a welcome break from this week’s cold snap.

Drivers near Highway 283 should remain cautious, as frigid mornings could lead to icy patches on roads. Local authorities advise checking weather updates before heading out and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles.

For those braving the cold Thursday morning, layers, gloves, and hats are essential. Stay informed by monitoring weather alerts and taking precautions against frostbite.
