Charleston, WV – An air quality alert is in effect across southern West Virginia until midnight Saturday due to wildfire smoke from regional fires. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued a code ORANGE alert, signaling that pollution levels may pose health risks for sensitive groups.

According to the DEP, the alert covers areas including Wayne, Cabell, Lincoln, and Kanawha counties. The advisory urges children, the elderly, and people with asthma, heart disease, or lung issues to avoid outdoor exertion to limit health impacts.

Weather changes could influence air quality, but conditions are expected to remain concerning through Saturday. The DEP advises residents to check current air monitor readings at AirNow.gov for up-to-date information on air pollution levels. Local officials emphasize the importance of taking precautions, particularly for those in at-risk groups, to minimize exposure to potentially harmful particulate matter.
