Dallas, TX – Widespread rainfall across the Southern Plains and Midwest is raising flash flood concerns from Oklahoma to Indiana through the end of the holiday weekend.
According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, a multi-day storm system will bring repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms beginning Friday, April 18, and lasting through Sunday night, April 20. Areas most at risk include Dallas, Oklahoma City, Springfield, and Indianapolis, with 2 to 4 inches of rainfall expected. Some locations could receive locally higher amounts.
The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of this region under a “Slight Risk” for excessive rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, poor drainage zones, and urban roadways. The flood risk extends north into Missouri and east toward the Middle Mississippi River Valley, including parts of Kentucky and southern Illinois.
Officials advise residents to remain weather-aware and avoid driving through flooded roads. The National Weather Service reminds drivers, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” as over 50% of flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
With rain likely persisting into late Sunday, residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, sign up for emergency alerts, and review preparedness plans to stay safe through the weekend.
