Boston, MA – Temperatures across Massachusetts and much of southern New England are expected to soar into the 90s on Thursday, prompting moderate heat-related health risks for sensitive groups.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, the heat index will climb into the 90 to 95-degree range by midday June 5. The agency’s experimental HeatRisk forecast shows widespread “Moderate” risk across central and eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut — especially impacting those without access to cooling or adequate hydration.
Communities including Worcester, Springfield, Providence, and Hartford are all in zones where heat-related illness may occur in vulnerable populations such as older adults, outdoor workers, and those with underlying health conditions. Coastal areas such as Newport and New London face a lower, “Minor” risk, but inland cities will bear the brunt of the heat.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water. Cooling centers may open in urban areas as early as Thursday morning. Those without air conditioning should seek relief in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.
The heat threat is expected to ease Friday as a weak cold front approaches. Additional advisories are possible if conditions worsen.
