Springfield, Mo. – Winds topping 60 mph and strong thunderstorms are targeting southern Missouri today and into Saturday, posing risks of flooding, hail, and hazardous travel—especially along and south of I-44.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Flood Watch remains in effect for much of southern Missouri and southeast Kansas. The highest potential for severe weather is expected this morning through early Saturday, with damaging wind gusts, isolated hail, and rounds of heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.
Communities including Joplin, Springfield, Branson, and Rolla face a heightened risk for downed trees, scattered power outages, and reduced visibility during storms. Local rainfall totals could reach 2 inches through Sunday, with pockets seeing up to 4 inches.
Residents should avoid travel during high-impact hours—particularly Friday morning and midday Saturday—and ensure cell phones are charged and emergency kits are accessible. Expect possible lane closures or delays on U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 44 due to pooling water.
Severe weather chances will persist into Sunday, with more thunderstorms and localized flooding expected across central and southern Missouri.
Warnings remain in effect through Saturday night. Additional advisories may follow as conditions evolve.
