Southern Illinois and southwest Indiana are preparing for damaging winds and heavy rain as remnants of Hurricane Helene move into the region. Gusts up to 65 mph are expected, with the heaviest winds projected along and south of the Interstate 64 corridor. Residents are urged to secure loose objects and prepare for possible tree damage and power outages throughout Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, rain totals of 2 to 5 inches are forecast, with flooding risks increasing by afternoon. A Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday night. High winds and saturated soil could lead to downed trees and power lines, creating hazardous road conditions. Drivers along I-64 should remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours, expected between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Looking ahead, the region could see calmer weather by Saturday afternoon, but with more rain expected early next week. Be prepared for updates on evolving weather conditions and stay safe.
