Southern Illinois – Residents in Southern Illinois should prepare for dangerous conditions as an ice storm moves through the region from early Sunday morning through Monday. Significant ice accumulation, hazardous roads, and widespread power outages are likely during this time.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the Ice Storm Warning will begin at 2 a.m. Sunday and last until 6 a.m. Monday. Forecasters predict ice accumulations between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch, with snow and sleet totals reaching up to two inches in some areas. The storm will primarily impact highways, including I-57, bridges, and overpasses, making travel extremely dangerous.

Residents are urged to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should keep an emergency kit in their vehicle, including a flashlight, food, and water. Power outages could last several days due to ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs.

An arctic blast will follow the storm, with wind chills dropping into the single digits or below zero by Monday night. These frigid temperatures increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for those without power or proper heating.

Local officials encourage residents to stock up on essentials, charge devices, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Avoid touching downed power lines, and report outages to your electric company immediately.
