Carbondale, IL – Residents in southern Illinois are facing dangerous winter conditions as an Ice Storm Warning remains active through 6 a.m. Monday. Significant ice accumulation, coupled with high winds and freezing temperatures, will create hazardous travel and power outage risks.

According to the National Weather Service, up to two inches of snow and sleet, along with a quarter to half an inch of ice, are expected across the region. Winds gusting up to 35 mph will likely bring down tree limbs and power lines, potentially leaving thousands without electricity. Travel on roads, including I-57 and local routes, is strongly discouraged due to slick conditions and limited visibility.

By Monday afternoon, an arctic air mass will bring dangerously low wind chills, dipping into the single digits or below zero. Residents are advised to limit time outdoors and prepare for potential long-term outages by stocking emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights.

Local authorities emphasize that travel should only occur if absolutely necessary. If driving is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is winterized, carry emergency supplies, and allow extra time for trips. Avoid sudden stops or sharp turns, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The forecast for the remainder of the week includes continued cold temperatures, with highs struggling to reach freezing through Friday. Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and report power outages or fallen lines to local utilities.

Stay safe and prepared as winter conditions intensify across the region.
