Valdosta, GA – A tornado watch has been issued for southern Georgia as Hurricane Helene continues to move northward, bringing a significant tornado risk. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the watch, effective until 10:00 p.m. EDT, for areas 60 miles north of Gainesville, FL, extending through southern Georgia.
According to the NWS, rainbands from Hurricane Helene will create conditions conducive to tornado formation. Strengthening wind fields and increasing low-level winds are heightening the chances of tornadoes developing throughout Thursday.
A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible, and severe thunderstorms could develop in the area. Residents in southern Georgia are advised to stay vigilant and be prepared for severe weather. The NWS recommends that individuals take shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued.
The watch area includes regions prone to extreme turbulence and wind gusts reaching 60 knots. The NWS urges residents to monitor the weather closely, as conditions may worsen as the day progresses. Remain on high alert and follow updates from local authorities and weather services.
