Trinidad, CO – Southern Colorado residents should brace for winter weather as a storm is set to hit Thursday morning. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties, predicting significant snowfall and strong winds.

According to the NWS, the advisory covers the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Las Animas, and Huerfano Counties. The storm begins at 9 a.m. MST and lasts until 8 p.m. MST. Snowfall totals are expected to reach 2 to 5 inches, with the heaviest snow falling near mountainous areas. Winds gusting up to 45 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, creating hazardous conditions.

Travelers should anticipate slippery roads and reduced visibility, especially during the evening commute. The Pikes Peak region, including Woodland Park and Northern El Paso County, will also see snowfall ranging from 2 to 4 inches. Wind gusts could peak at 50 mph in some areas, intensifying driving challenges.

Drivers are urged to slow down and exercise caution. Officials recommend checking road conditions before traveling by dialing 511. Residents in affected areas should plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

The National Weather Service also advises residents to secure outdoor items vulnerable to strong winds and ensure their vehicles are winter-ready. With temperatures dropping, additional precautions against freezing conditions are advised.

This storm marks the first significant winter weather event of 2025 for southern Colorado, and residents are reminded to stay informed through local updates.
