Avalon, California – A rare March heat wave could push temperatures near 95 degrees across the Channel Islands early next week, prompting an Extreme Heat Watch for communities across the Southern California island chain.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, the Extreme Heat Watch runs from Monday morning through Friday evening for Catalina Island, Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, San Miguel Island, and Anacapa Island.
Forecasters warn that this prolonged stretch of unusually hot weather could produce record-breaking temperatures for mid-March, with some island locations climbing into the mid-90s during peak afternoon hours.
Avalon on Catalina Island, along with areas such as Smugglers Cove and Cuyler Harbor, could experience extended periods of summer-like heat as high pressure strengthens across Southwest California.
While the islands typically benefit from ocean breezes, meteorologists say the developing weather pattern could limit cooling influences and allow temperatures to surge well above normal.
Health officials warn that early-season heat waves often increase the risk of heat illness because many residents and visitors are not yet acclimated to hot conditions. Those spending extended time outdoors, including hikers and boaters, may face the highest risk.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat, and check on vulnerable individuals as the unusual heat event develops through the upcoming week.
