Athens, OH – Residents in Southeast Ohio are preparing for dangerously cold temperatures as an Arctic blast moves in late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, an extreme cold watch will take effect Sunday at 9 p.m. and remain active through Wednesday morning. Wind chills are expected to plummet as low as -15 degrees, with the coldest period likely occurring Monday morning.

These bitterly cold temperatures pose significant risks, including frostbite and hypothermia. Prolonged exposure to freezing conditions may also cause water pipes to rupture if proper precautions are not taken. Officials are urging residents to dress in layers, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensure their homes are winter-ready.

Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors or provide them with warm, dry shelter. Additionally, community members are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and friends during the extreme cold.
