Wichita, Kansas – A volatile round of severe storms is expected to erupt along and east of I-135 after 2 p.m. Monday, bringing the potential for 80 mph wind gusts, tennis ball-size hail, and isolated tornadoes across central and southeast Kansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will intensify through the afternoon and track east into the evening, targeting cities including Wichita, Emporia, and Coffeyville. The strongest activity is likely in the Flint Hills and southeast counties, where a Level 4 out of 5 severe risk has been issued.

Areas in the Level 3 and 4 risk zones — including Winfield, Eureka, and Chanute — should prepare for destructive hail, power outages, and sudden downpours that could impact evening commutes. Winds may down trees and power lines, and some isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Residents in risk zones should secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and stay weather-aware. If warnings are issued, have a plan in place — especially if you’re outdoors or traveling.

Storm threats are expected to persist through midnight, with additional watches or warnings possible as conditions evolve. Stay tuned to local alerts for rapid updates.
