Rapid City, SD – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket parts of South Dakota and Wyoming, bringing heavy snow and dangerous conditions starting Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning from 5 a.m. Saturday through 5 p.m. Monday for the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota and the Wyoming Black Hills. Forecasts predict snow accumulations between 8 and 18 inches, with localized amounts exceeding 18 inches. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, leading to blowing snow and whiteout conditions.

The Northern Foothills, including cities like Spearfish and Whitewood, will also experience significant snowfall. Snowfall between 7 and 11 inches is expected, with gusts reaching 50 mph. The strong winds may down tree branches, adding to travel risks.

According to the National Weather Service, roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous. Travelers should prepare for challenging and potentially impossible travel conditions. Drivers are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights.

The storm is expected to peak Sunday night, with reduced visibility and blowing snow complicating efforts to maintain passable roads. Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible and monitor updates on road conditions by calling 511.

The storm’s impacts will linger through Monday, making early preparation crucial. Residents should secure outdoor items and be ready for power outages caused by gusting winds.
