Rapid City, SD – The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the Northern Black Hills in South Dakota and Wyoming’s Black Hills. The advisory will remain in effect until 11 a.m. MST Thursday.

Heavy snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected, with some areas possibly seeing higher totals. Winds could reach speeds of 40 mph, causing blowing snow and reducing visibility. These conditions will likely make roads slippery, creating hazardous travel during the Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory was issued late Wednesday night. Cities such as Deadwood, Lead, Sundance, and Cheyenne Crossing are among the affected areas. Residents are urged to slow down and exercise caution while traveling.

The combination of snow and wind will significantly impact drivers, especially on rural roads and elevated areas like Terry Peak and Rochford. Visibility may be reduced, and icy patches are likely on untreated roadways.

The advisory also warns of potential delays and disruptions to travel plans. Residents should prepare for difficult conditions and check for updated road conditions by calling 511 or using local transportation resources.

Snowfall is expected to taper off later Thursday morning, but some blowing snow could persist. Those in the affected areas are encouraged to allow extra time for travel and avoid unnecessary trips.

Stay informed about evolving conditions and heed all weather advisories. This storm underscores the importance of winter travel precautions.
