South Dakota – Spotty snow and frigid temperatures will dominate the weather across South Dakota this weekend, bringing subzero wind chills and light snowfall to many areas. Travelers should prepare for challenging conditions, especially along I-90 and I-29.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chills will plummet as low as 15 below zero overnight into Saturday. Daytime highs will struggle to climb above the low 20s, with actual lows dipping into the single digits. Snowfall will be light but widespread, with the best chances for accumulation near the Missouri River Valley on Saturday and northwest Iowa by Sunday. Accumulations of up to half an inch could create slick spots on roadways, particularly during the early morning hours.

Those venturing outdoors or traveling this weekend should dress warmly and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles. Frostbite can occur in minutes when wind chills are below zero. Drivers are urged to check road conditions before heading out, especially on stretches of I-90 through central South Dakota, where blowing snow could reduce visibility.

Looking ahead, the extended forecast shows partly sunny skies returning by Sunday with highs near 24°F. However, Sunday night could bring lows around 6°F, reinforcing the need for layered clothing and proper heating precautions. Early next week offers slight relief, with highs near 38°F by Tuesday.
